I don’t see such a dichotomy between matter and spirit. For, what is the ultimate reality of matter, but spiritual? Through science we become more able to explain the past and predict future physical events in the realm of the material, but there’s a threshold of reality that our rational understanding is unable to trespass. Through magick we submit our brain, our consciousness, to the experience of what’s real beyond reason. The material world is uncannily mystical, and the spiritual manifests itself through what’s physical.
You might not see that dichotomy. I don't either. A lot of of people in Thelema, many of them quite visible "names", do - and have been actively promoting an expression of Thelema which is a sort of materialistic religion completely devoid of magical practice.
